About the Project
For this project, I was tasked with designing and illustrating an original book cover for Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli — a coming-of-age novel following Simon Spier, a teenager navigating first love, identity, and the fear of being outed before he is ready.
The challenge was capturing the emotional core of the book in a single image — balancing the warmth and humor of Simon's voice with the vulnerability and stakes underneath it. The cover needed to feel personal and intimate while still being visually striking enough to stand out.
The illustration was developed to reflect the themes of hidden identity and self-discovery, using color, composition, and character to invite the reader in without giving too much away. Typography was chosen to complement the illustrated elements and reinforce the tone of the story — earnest, a little messy, and full of heart.
